T O P I C R E V I E WRobert Pearlman Dr. Gregory Olsen will be the third crew member aboard Soyuz TMA-7 when it launches this October to the International Space Station. His privately-funded research mission was organized by Space Adventures. Olsen participated in today's Expedition 12 press conference (he will fly to space with NASA's Bill McArthur and Russia's Valery Tokarev), during which a few samples of his personal patch were available to reporters. For more about Gregory Olsen or Space Adventures, see: GOtoOrbit.com spaceman1953Does anyone else see 'The Grinch Who Stole Christmas' or some other Seuss-like character in the Earth design?Gene BellaastroplSoyuz TMA-7/ISS-Exp-12 crew, astronaut portraits and patches (new versions!) are on NASA's website now. Jacques van OeneAll patches the crew has on their suits for launch were made by Alex Panchenko. (Very strange that Olsen is not wearing the patch above, but the Panchenko personal patch on his suit?)---Jacques www.spacepatches.info pargooWould anyone by any chance have the artwork for Greg Olsen's personal ISS patch? I mean the 'Sensors Unlimited' one with the bright blue/aqua background he wore on launch day, not the *other* black one with the gold border which features above and everywhere else. I have been unable to find it anywhere. Robert PearlmanAs Jacques mentions, the patch you are seeking was produced by Alex Panchenko, as seen here.pargoo Jorges to the rescue?Robert PearlmanHave you contacted Alex Panchenko? What did he say?pargooContact Panchenko? I've done so in the past. Withholding his artwork makes no sense. Does he think I'm going to start manufacturing patches of my own?aerospace educatorActually, he is concerned about people making knock-offs of his patches. I have dealt with Alex for a number of years and, when the budget allows, have purchased a few of his patches. He has told me that he makes the designs for the cosmonauts and is not interested in commercial reproduction for the general masses. Perhaps, this is how is able to get so many design commissions from the cosmonauts. Stewart Aviation has produced a few of his patches in the past and Randy Hunt did some nice reproductions of a few. Alex, however, does his best to keep the copyright on his designs and does not authorise reproductions (aside from the Stewart Aviation ones).spacemanJust my 10 cents worth but it seems a shame that in what are two very publicly funded programs US/Russia some parts of it are now 'out of bounds' to collectors. (Aside from all of the obvious ones NASA has to deal with can you send me a spacesuit/moon rock/shuttle for the garden etc).Such was the public's desire years ago to invest in some small part of the U.S space program; patches were manufactured as souvenirs that had not actually existed i.e. the Mercury series. For patch collectors being able to obtain replicas from a bona fide source(s) is important. Witness the debate for official/unofficial patches on other forum threads. If anything the desire for collectors to own a replica will probably result in someone manufacturing a poorer quality 'rip-off' to satisfy a desire. Is it unreasonable for a collector/space program supporter/whoever to want to obtain a replica of an official patch featured on an official portrait? Or should the answer be any patches featured on official portraits are available as replicas from i.e. AB Emblem for any publicly funded program? That's probably 15 cents worth,NickSpaceman.Patch Collector/spaceflight supporter/enthusiastic promoter of spaceflight/eagerly awaiting U.K astronauts en masse - Rule Britannia etc. www.spaceboosters.co.uk Robert PearlmanJust to note, the link provided to Panchenko's website in my earlier reply is advertising the sale of the patch he designed for Greg Olsen. So while he may not be making the artwork available, he is offering the patch to collectors.
